Regie und Produktion, die Verantwortlichen f\u00fcr Kamera, Ausstattung, Licht und Ton besuchten die verschiedenen Locations, um die unterschiedlichen Einstellungen final zu bestimmen und M\u00f6glichkeiten auszutesten. Dabei suchten wir auch noch nach noch offenen\u00a0 Locations.<\/p>\n
Technische Diskussionen sowie Entscheide f\u00fcr die Requisiten und Kost\u00fcm fanden oft parallel und mit Hilfe von Whatsapp Chats und Google Translate statt. Abenteuerlich war auch, dass wir uns in letzter Minute f\u00fcr eine neue Location entschieden haben. In nur zwei Tagen wechselten wir eine unserer Hauptspielst\u00e4tten aus. Dank der Ruhe und dem Pragmatismus unserer Regisseurin Maria und unserem Kameramann Gabriel, gest\u00fctzt von der guten Laune im Team, haben wir auch das gemeistert.<\/p>\n

Organisieren auf Kirgisisch<\/strong><\/h6>\nWas die Logistik betrifft, so sind die Vorbereitungen eine echte Challenge. ALLES braucht enorm viel mehr Zeit, als wir uns das hier in der Schweiz gewohnt sind. Eine sehr nervenzerm\u00fcrbende und anstrengende Erfahrung in gewissen Momenten. Es ist wohl nicht nur ein Vorurteil, dass wir Schweizer sehr pr\u00e4zis, organisiert und genau sind und deshalb weit im Voraus planen. Die Kirgisen sind sich gewohnt die Dinge kurzfristig und spontan zu organisieren, weil es oft sowieso anders kommt als geplant. So treffen hier zwei sehr unterschiedliche Arbeitsweisen aufeinander. Doch langsam finden wir uns. Von Anfang an war es uns ein Anliegen, diesen Unterschieden mit Respekt zu begegnen und auch die Vorteile der Arbeitsweise der anderen Kultur zu sehen. Tec Rec, location scouting, rehearsals and fittings – all at once<\/strong><\/h6>\nAs this production is taking place so far away from home, our days are very limited, and thus packed and long. Upon arrival we started with the rehearsals straight away. Then the tec recces, technical reconnaissances, of the locations followed. Director and producers, the department heads of photography, set design, lighting and sound visited the different locations to make final decisions on camera angles and to test the various possibilities. Simultaneously, we were also still scouting for undecided locations.<\/p>\n
Discussions about technical implementations as well as decisions on props and costumes often took place simultaneously by way of Whatsapp chats and google translate. Just as adventurous was our last minute decision for a new location. Within only two days we replaced one of the main locations. Thanks to director Maria\u2019s and DOP Gabriel\u2019s calm and pragmatic decision making, supported by the good mood of the team all these challenges were conquered splendidly.<\/p>\n
How to organize the Kyrgyz way <\/strong><\/h6>\nLogistically preproduction is quite a challenge, to say the least. EVERYTHING takes way longer than what we are used to here in Switzerland. A very nerve-racking and exhausting experience in some moments. It might not only be prejudiced to say that the Swiss are very precise, organized and exact und thus like to plan far in advance. The Kyrgyz are used to organizing things at a shorter notice and more spontaneously, because things change anyhow. Therefore, two very different ways of functioning are clashing. Slowly, we are finding our feet. It had been our concern from the beginning to meet such cultural differences with respect and to also acknowledge the advantages of the other way of operating. It will definitely remain interesting.<\/p>\n
Accordingly, information seems to change by the minute and at last second \u2013 note that every time we need a translator for the new information to be shared. However, we have to admit that the Kyrgyz are champions at improvising and finding last-minute solutions. That always helps and takes the pressure off. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n
How to treat the actors the Kyrgyz way<\/strong><\/h6>\nTraditions and hierarchies are highly important to the Kyrgyz. A fact that quickly becomes apparent when working with the actors. While we are used to showing greatest respect to the lead actor or actress, Kyrgyz pay their highest respect to the oldest actors and actresses.<\/p>\n
Working with Kyrgyz actors means knowing their traditions well. Our Swiss female crew members would demonstrate the procedure of clipping the microphone under the costumes together with our sound technician to make sure that the female actresses are prepared and feel comfortable with this happening.<\/p>\n
Bedroom scenes are even more sensitive. While nothing dishonorable –\u00a0 in our eyes \u2013 had been planned, all the actors are very concerned about their reputation. We are still working on finding the right solution to tell the story grippingly while respecting their worries.<\/p>\n
How to talk Kyrgyz<\/strong><\/h6>\nLanguage is challenging and funny at the same time. While some actors and crew members speak English others don\u2019t. Especially, when it comes to logistics knowing at least some Russian would be of great help.<\/p>\n
This puts our fixer and translator Nadine Boller in a very central position, especially when it comes to logistics. Together with another translator, making-of-filmers or script supervisors knowing English she makes sure all information is understood in the relevant language. <\/h4>\nLast preparations in Kyrgyzstan<\/h4>\n
Our crew has arrived in Bishkek! Time to give you some insight on what we are working on so shortly before shooting.<\/p>\n
Tec Rec, location scouting, rehearsals and fittings – all at once<\/strong><\/h6>\nAs this production is taking place so far away from home, our days are very limited, and thus packed and long. Upon arrival we started with the rehearsals straight away. Then the tec recces, technical reconnaissances, of the locations followed. Director and producers, the department heads of photography, set design, lighting and sound visited the different locations to make final decisions on camera angles and to test the various possibilities. Simultaneously, we were also still scouting for undecided locations.<\/p>\n
Discussions about technical implementations as well as decisions on props and costumes often took place simultaneously by way of Whatsapp chats and google translate. Just as adventurous was our last minute decision for a new location. Within only two days we replaced one of the main locations. Thanks to director Maria\u2019s and DOP Gabriel\u2019s calm and pragmatic decision making, supported by the good mood of the team all these challenges were conquered splendidly.<\/p>\n
How to organize the Kyrgyz way <\/strong><\/h6>\nLogistically preproduction is quite a challenge, to say the least. EVERYTHING takes way longer than what we are used to here in Switzerland. A very nerve-racking and exhausting experience in some moments. It might not only be prejudiced to say that the Swiss are very precise, organized and exact und thus like to plan far in advance. The Kyrgyz are used to organizing things at a shorter notice and more spontaneously, because things change anyhow. Therefore, two very different ways of functioning are clashing. Slowly, we are finding our feet. It had been our concern from the beginning to meet such cultural differences with respect and to also acknowledge the advantages of the other way of operating. It will definitely remain interesting.<\/p>\n
Accordingly, information seems to change by the minute and at last second \u2013 note that every time we need a translator for the new information to be shared. However, we have to admit that the Kyrgyz are champions at improvising and finding last-minute solutions. That always helps and takes the pressure off. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n
How to treat the actors the Kyrgyz way<\/strong><\/h6>\nTraditions and hierarchies are highly important to the Kyrgyz. A fact that quickly becomes apparent when working with the actors. While we are used to showing greatest respect to the lead actor or actress, Kyrgyz pay their highest respect to the oldest actors and actresses.<\/p>\n
Working with Kyrgyz actors means knowing their traditions well. Our Swiss female crew members would demonstrate the procedure of clipping the microphone under the costumes together with our sound technician to make sure that the female actresses are prepared and feel comfortable with this happening.<\/p>\n
Bedroom scenes are even more sensitive. While nothing dishonorable –\u00a0 in our eyes \u2013 had been planned, all the actors are very concerned about their reputation. We are still working on finding the right solution to tell the story grippingly while respecting their worries.<\/p>\n
How to talk Kyrgyz<\/strong><\/h6>\nLanguage is challenging and funny at the same time. While some actors and crew members speak English others don\u2019t. Especially, when it comes to logistics knowing at least some Russian would be of great help.<\/p>\n
This puts our fixer and translator Nadine Boller in a very central position, especially when it comes to logistics. Together with another translator, making-of-filmers or script supervisors knowing English she makes sure all information is understood in the relevant language. Last but not least, also Google translate helps out from time to time. Sometimes also being the reason for a good laugh. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n
